Fire tore through a Valencia apartment complex’s clubhouse, heavily damaging the building but forcing no evacuations, fire officials said Sunday.

The blaze broke out at 10:27 p.m. at the Promenade Apartments behind the Promenade Shopping Center on Magic Mountain Parkway, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Tom Bryski. It appeared to have been started accidentally in the clubhouse fire place, Bryski said.

There were no injuries and no one had to be evacuated.

The blaze was knocked down at 12:07 a.m. Sunday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Fire shot out of the roof of the clubhouse, and more than 100 residents gathered outside to watch nearly 30 firefighters attack the blaze.

Promenade Apartments resident Robb Alvey said he was working out in the connecting gym when the fire broke out.

He said an alarm did not go off and he had to be informed of the fire by a woman who banged on a window.

“The thing that freaked me out the most was there was no alarm or no indication of anything going on at all and there was all this smoke,” Alvey said.

Laura Sogamoso said she and her fiance were cleaning up after their wedding shower when her brother came running in and reported there was smoke coming from across the street. The couple and their shower guests watched as flames tore through the building and passers-by stopped to watch, Sogamoso said.

“For sure the day of the wedding shower will forever be an eventful night to remember,” she said in an e-mail.

Alvey said in an e-mail he saw smoke but thought little of it because he has seen fog machines and smokiness in the clubhouse at parties before.

Workers at the Promenade Apartments were not allowed to comment Sunday about the fire.
