Lifestyle calendar: Dates to watch

Lexus Jazz and Blues Series - The sounds of live jazz and blues bands once again fill Town Center Drive in Valencia during the 10th annual Lexus of Valencia Jazz & Blues Concert Series. These Friday night events feature regional, national and international entertainers in a quaint street party setting while offering interactive activities for adults and children.

This year's series will run through Sept. 5. (There is no concert on Friday, July 4.) Hours for the concerts are 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. and they take place on Town Center Drive adjacent to the Hyatt Valencia. There is a variety of interactive programming for the entire family, including a Children's Area. No pets or outside food or beverages allowed. Admission is free.

Saturday
Evening Under the Oaks - The second annual Evening Under the Oaks will be held at the home of Mayor Bob Kellar on June 21 from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. The outdoor event, which raises funds for the Santa Clarita Symphony, will have a western theme this year and guests are invited to wear their best western "duds."

Dinner will be high-falootin' barbecue, and there will be a mini-western town featuring a general store, bandstand and a saloon reminiscent of the "Gunsmoke" television show. Entertainment will feature The McGrath Project band, as well as musicians from the Santa Clarita Symphony. Admission is $100. For reservations contact the Santa Claria Symphony at (661) 284-6044. Star Wars Under the Stars - The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation Tesoro Adobe Historic Park presents Star Wars Under the Stars, A Family Night at the Movies. Free games, dinner, music and museum tours are provided. The event is going to take place on Saturday June 21, at 7 p.m, at Tesoro Adobe Historic Park, 29350, Avenida Rancho Teroso, Valencia. Repertory East Playhouse fundraiser - The REP will host Summer Evening with the REP: A New Love on Saturday, June 28 at the River Village of Valencia, starting at 7 p.m. The black tie optional fundraiser will include a petit buffet, wine bar dessert, silent auction and dancing. Tickets are $75 for individuals and $135 for couples. Special ticket packages are also available. Towsley Canyon bird hike
The Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority will host an early morning bird hike at Ed Davis Park in Towsley Canyon at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 21. Bring your binoculars and meet at the entrance to the park at 24255 The Old Road in Newhall. The program is free, parking is $5. For information call (323) 221-9944.

Fibroid tumor seminar
A free seminar on fibroid tumors will be held on Wednesday, June 18 at 7 p.m. at the Airtel Plaza Hotel, 7277 Valjean Ave. in Van Nuys. Discussions will cover: what fibroids are and what are their symptoms; the medical consequences of living with fibroids; hysterectomy and myomectomy; and alternative treatments, such as uterine artery emoblization. Moonlight Conditioning Hike Wednesday June 18. Moderate five mile, 1,200 foot gain to view San Fernando Valley. Meet at 7 p.m. at trailhead. Leaders: Gaylon Rodin (284-5613), Mary Ellen Dittemore (254-8543), Ken Kerner (251-5156).

Mount Islip Sunday June 29. Moderate seven mile, 1,500' foot gain hike via Little Jimmy CG. Great views of Crystal Lake on one side, far ranging desert on other. This is bighorn sheep country. One hour to trailhead. Meet at 8 a.m. at Santa Clarita rideshare point. Leaders: Ed Benison (254-7517), Ken Kerner (251-5156).

Castaic Lake programs
The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting two new programs at Castaic Lake Recreation Area.

For Movies at the Lake, the community is invited to bring snacks, a comfortable chair or blanket and enjoy a family movie in Paradise Cove on the lagoon. Vehicle parking is $11 but the movie is free. Movies are scheduled for July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 5 and Oct. 3.

A Summer Campfire Talk Series will be held every Saturday at the new campground amphitheater, on the east side of the lagoon, from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Topics are: June 21, Lieguarding; June 28, Insects; July 5, A Look at Nature; July 12, scuba diving. Cherry-picking time
It's pick your-own-cherries time at several orchards in Leona Valley, and the activity makes a fun family outing. Hot rods at the COC Art Gallery
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is holding a Hot Rod art exhibition from June 21 - July 12, which will showcase car-inspired artwork from several artists. A reception for the exhibition will be held on June 21 from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. The reception will include a car show featuring hot rods and race cars outside the gallery, as well as a live performance of The Sound Waves in the college amphitheater. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Admission to the gallery and reception is free. SC Ballet programs
The Santa Clarita Ballet Company and Academy will present two ballet programs during the weekend of June 21 and 22 at the Performing Arts Center at the College of the Canyons. "Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass" will be offered as a matinee on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. On both nights, the company will present "Kingdom of the Shades," "As The Piano Rolls," and a new contemporary theatre dance choreographed by Artistic Director Carol Guidry. Caregiver Resource Day
The Supportive Services Department of the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is sponsoring a free morning symposium designed to provide assistance to the growing number of caregivers. This public service event takes place on Saturday June 28 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market St. in Newhall. This half-day symposium will focus on caregiving issues to enable the attendee to learn new skills to help manage the stresses and frustrations of caregiving, how to reestablish control over their own lives, plan for the future, and manage difficult behaviors by loved ones.
