A woman and her child were uninjured after the car they were in became engulfed in flames on northbound Interstate 5 in the Castaic area Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Just before 4 p.m., the woman pulled over on the right shoulder when her 1999 Chevy Malibu's engine caught fire, said CHP Officer George White.

The woman and her child were able to get out of the car before it became fully engulfed. Officers closed the two right lanes for about 20 minutes while firefighters put out the flames, White said.
