Santa Clarita planners will explain Tuesday what they plan to do help protect local natural resources as developments continue to sprout on the valley's surrounding hillsides.

At a Planning Commission study session, city planners will present the draft Conservation and Open Space Element of the One Valley One Vision plan, the joint county-city valleywide general plan that will likely be adopted in spring 2009.

This element includes historical resources, water resources, climate change, parks and open space.

"The Conservation and Open Space Element reflects the city's objectives and policies for protecting and utilizing this valley's natural resources," city Senior Planner Jason Smiskso said in a statement.

"The element establishes policies for the long-term preservation of open space and the community benefits derived from it."

The study session is open to the public and will be the second in a five-part series of sessions discussing the draft elements of One Valley One Vision. The Conservation and Open Space Element is available for viewing online at

In April, planners discussed threats of fires, floods and earthquakes in the Safety Element, which is also available online.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Century Conference Room on the first floor of City Hall at 23920 Valencia Blvd.
