Pacific Pipeline Systems LLP, a Long Beach-based oil transport company whose pipeline spilled thousands of gallons of oil into Pyramid Lake, has agreed to pay $1.3 million and quit using a part of its pipeline through an unstable part of the mountains, federal officials said Wednesday.

"The United States brought this case to protect an important body of water, Pyramid Lake," said Ignacia S. Moreno, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Environment and Natural Resources Division. "Through this Clean Water Act settlement, we are protecting Pyramid Lake from future oil spills and receiving a significant civil penalty from Pacific Pipeline."

The spill occurred March 2005 near Interstate 5, about 20 miles north of the Santa Clarita Valley.
