"I feel so much better. I feel like I'm going to sleep tonight," said Ken Yoder, a real estate lender.

Ken is a 48 year-old who feels he could lose about 30 pounds. Recently, he has been feeling tightness all over his body and needs to decompress with massage, so he can relax and sleep.

Massage is a great way to improve overall health. Doctors and various health practitioners recommend massage as part of a healthy lifestyle. As stress becomes as regular as eating, many people are looking toward massage to relieve their bodies and let go of the stress.

Massage history
Massage has been around for centuries. When King Ahasuerus was looking for a new queen, all the beautiful young women were brought to the castle in Shushan. The young ladies were then massaged for six months with the oil of myrrh and six months with the oil of balsam. After these treatments they were then presented individually before the king.

In the early 19th century Per Henrick Ling introduced and developed the Swedish massage in Europe, though it has been around for many centuries in India and all throughout the Orient.

Massage today
Today massage is becoming a regular therapy for people of all backgrounds. The International Spa Association (ISPA), with more than 3,000 members worldwide, has found the main reason people visit spas is to get a relaxing massage. Jim Root, chairman of ISPA and president of Glen Ivy Hot Springs, said, "There is a spa experience for every body. You can expect from a world class spa, a massage designed for you."

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, spa treatments have overtaken golf as the most popular attendee activity during corporate meetings and events.

The experience
For a look into the spa experience consider Glen Ivy Day Spa Valencia, which opened in 2005.

What can a newcomer expect?

When you walk in the receptionists are attentive and friendly. When you're not sure what service you want, they are great at discerning what you need.

After being escorted to the locker room you can use the steam room and Jacuzzi. Dressed in a plush robe you walk into the Solarium and fill out the intake form, and then you are ready for your massage.

Today you decided on an 80-minute massage with hot stones. The gentle heat of the smooth stones is relieving. When you come out of the massage room, the therapist is there with a cool refreshing cup of water, and is able to escort you back to the warmth of the solarium. You can now take a deep breath, and let the stress go. You promise the next time you won't wait so long to come back.

Spa's are not only for massaging. There are manicures and pedicures in a very relaxing atmosphere. The body treatments exfoliate and replenish the skin. They are like a facial for the whole body. Skin care includes high quality products to address different needs. For those with additional needs, highly effective anti-aging products such as Cellex-C might used. Your esthetician will be able to recommend what your skin needs to look and feel your personal best.

With all the stresses we face today, a natural relaxing atmosphere and a hands-on approach to relieving stress is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Here are a few comments from people who have benefited from this treatment:

Kathy, 55 - "After a long hard day as a caregiver, a great massage helps me to feel blissfully relaxed, and sometimes helps me to sleep."

Steven, 43 - "Massage has been a helpful tool for my healing, after a serious skull injury. I have learned of three natural ways to assist me in my successful recovery. One of these is through lymphatic massage, which has kept me relaxed and it keeps the toxins moving. I wouldn't have gotten this far without massage."

Mary, 66 - "When I get regular massages I feel more flexible and I have a feeling of overall well-being."

So, to look and feel your best, a visit to your local spa is just what we all need to regain a healthy balance.
