A dog that was allegedly struck by his owner with a shovel Saturday was euthanized, officials confirmed Thursday.

Matthew Lantzy, 30, of Saugus struck his pit bull on its head several times with a shovel in his backyard, fracturing its skull, a Sheriff's Department report said.

The pit bull was transported to Saugus Animal Hospital, where it was euthanized by Dr. Greg Ehrman.

According to Lt. Tom Bryski, Lantzy was booked on charges of felony cruelty to animals and held at the Sheriff's Station in lieu of $20,000 bail.
