WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Following a briefing Wednesday by senior officials from the Department of Defense and the intelligence community, U.S. Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-CA), the senior Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, called on the Administration to immediately cease transfers of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to countries where terrorists formerly held at the Cuban detention center have returned to terrorism.

The briefing "only reinforced my grave concerns about the President's terrorist detention policies," McKeon said. "In light of the events in Yemen and the rising number of former Guantanamo detainees who have returned to the battlefield, the administration's policies and procedures for transferring and releasing detainees need more rigorous review and oversight."

"Congress has a responsibility to the American people to conduct a comprehensive review of all of the transfers and releases from Guantanamo that occurred in the Bush and Obama Administrations," McKeon continued. "The president should also immediately cease all releases or transfers to countries where terrorists previously held at Guantanamo have returned to the fight."
