"Be Cool to My School," a monthlong Santa Clarita Valley Auto Dealers Association contest, netted three local schools $1,000 each in cash and prizes.

Representatives from Bridgeport Elementary, Castaic Middle and Saugus High schools were on hand at Westfield Valencia Town Center earlier this month to accept $1,000 checks for money raised during the contest.

Area schools were awarded points for every test drive and automobile purchase made at participating Valencia Auto Center dealerships during the month of May. The elementary, junior high and senior high schools with the most test-driver-designated points at the end of the contest were declared winners.

"Bridgeport will be using the $1,000 to help fund our specialists programs, which include our library, computer lab and PE programs," said Principal Susan Bender. "These programs benefit all 930 students that attend Bridgeport."

Assistant Principal Renee Williams accepted the prize for Castaic Middle School, while Saugus Principal Bill Bolde did the honors for the Centurions.

"We'd like to help provide additional support to students struggling in areas of math and literacy," Bolde said of Saugus's plans for the money. "There is so much we can do through intervention programs. That $1,000 would go a long way."

Test-drive participants were entered in a contest for a trip for four to Costa Rica, along with a year's free subscription to The Signal. Jerry Bonnell and his wife won the grand prize.

"We were just happy to help Castaic Middle School get the points to possibly win $1,000. We are very excited about going to Costa Rica."

Participating dealerships included Valencia Acura, Valencia BMW, Valencia Chevrolet, Power Ford, Valencia Nissan, Galpin Saturn, Frontier Toyota, Galpin Lincoln Mercury and Mercedes-Benz of Valencia.
