Chip shot for home-delivered meals

Local Realtors raise funds for Home-Delivered-Meals program by holding golf tournament

The Southland Regional Association of Realtors, Santa Clarita Valley Division and the American Golf Association hosted a golf tournament earlier this week to prevent a local senior citizen foundation from retiring its meal delivery program.

The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, located in Newhall, prides itself on delivering meals to homebound seniors who rely upon the center's Home-Delivered Meals program to receive possibly the only hot meal they will eat all day.

The amount of money raised was not yet determined, but with a large number of golfers participating in Monday's tournament, the realtors group may be able to raise enough money to assist the Senior Center.

With demand for the door-to-door service outpacing funding in light of rising fuel and food costs, the Senior Center considered the possibility of imposing a wait list for the first time in the program's 30-year history.

To help the Senior Center maintain its meal delivery service, the SCV Division of the Southland Regional Association of Realtors partnered with the American Golf Association to raise funds at their 22nd annual gold tournament Monday at the Vista Valencia Golf Course - all in the name of saving the Home-Delivered Meals program.

With entry fees for the tournament at $100, a portion of the money raised was donated to the Senior Center, in hopes that it would help offset the increased costs and make sure that homebound seniors will be able to take advantage of the home-delivery service without having their names placed on a wait list.
