Be a smarter senior: Protect yourself and your assets

Seniors, adult children and caregivers are invited to attend a Smarter Seniors Forum on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, located at 22900 Market Street, Santa Clarita.

Presented by the County of Los Angeles Department of Consumer Affairs, the free community event will provide education on identity theft, advanced health directives, real estate and common consumer frauds, and elder abuse.

Speaking at the forum will be professionals from Consumer Affairs, Adult Protective Services and several other agencies. Key topics will include:

* Telemarketing fraud, fake lotteries and prizes, and fake check scams;

* Identity theft, abusive collectors and credit problems; 

* Abuse by caregivers, family members and conservators;

* Advanced Health Directives;

* Real estate fraud, reverse mortgages and foreclosures.

"Sadly, seniors are at heightened risk for being taken advantage of by others, and in a variety of unethical and predatory ways," said SuzAnn Nelsen, SCV Senior Center Director of Supportive Services. "This informative forum will help provide empowerment and hopefully lessen chances of deception, exploitation or mistreatment from occurring, and we urge community members to attend."

Speakers and representatives will be available after presentations to answer individuals' questions and dispense complaint forms.

In addition, brochures, contact information, refreshments and giveaways will be provided.

The forum - funded by a grant from the County of Los Angeles Department of Community and Senior Services - is presented in association with: County of Los Angeles Departments Consumer Affairs, Community and Senior Services Adult Protective Services Program, County of Los Angeles Bar Association-Elder Law Committee and the Outreach for Independent Living.
