Could it have been any more competitive at the top of the Foothill League this year?

In a year where two teams took home a league crown because only a few games separated their on-court achievements, parity was never more evident.

But Anne Susdorf was still able to start the season as reigning Foothill League singles champion and end it that way.

And there were plenty of tough challenges along the road.

Ana Lucia Fuentes and her sister Ana Cecilia helped lead West Ranch to a league title and into the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs, both program firsts.

On Oct. 22, 2009, the pair also helped West Ranch end the Vikings’ Foothill League-win streak at 56.

On the following Tuesday, Valencia’s Emily Fraczek ended another impressive run, temporarily halting Susdorf’s dominance of singles play in the SCV. Fraczek’s win in a 7-6, 7-2 tiebreaker ended an undefeated streak by Susdorf that dated back to Oct. 16, 2007.

However, when the league’s best gathered at The Paseo Club for the Foothill League’s annual postseason tournament, there was still only one singles champion standing.

Susdorf entered the postseason Foothill League singles bracket as the No. 1 seed and proceeded to conquer.

Susdorf made it to the semifinals after beating Valencia’s Kristie Kwok 6-0, 6-0 and Brigitta Benitez 6-2, 6-0. She swept Rachel Ho in straight sets to set up an inevitable showdown in the finals with Ana Lucia.

During the regular season, Ana Lucia only dropped two sets – a hard-fought loss to Susdorf and one to Emily Fraczek.

Ana Lucia fell behind early but bravely fought back.

In the end, the reigning champ’s forehand was too much. Ana Lucia was worn down and edged 6-4, 6-3, as Susdorf earned a second straight singles title.

Susdorf also led the Indians to the playoffs and did everything in her power to keep them there as long as possible. While her team fell in the first round, Susdorf did her part by winning three sets against Long Beach Wilson 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 in a 12-6 team loss.

In the CIF-Southern Section Division III Girls Tennis Individual Championships, Susdorf fell in the second round, but she went farther than any of her peers in Foothill League singles play.

The ceiling remains boundless for the talented junior.

As Foothill League tennis continues to improve, so does Susdorf, which is why she remains the All-Santa Clarita Valley Girls Tennis Singles Player of the Year.
