Valencia High's Shane Vereen was a three-sport athlete who shined the brightest on the football field.

I will never forget the game when Valencia played at Notre Dame in 2005.

There was a ton of excitement going into the game because we had USC-bound quarterback Garrett Green and Arizona State-bound running back Rodney Glass on one side and Ole Miss-bound quarterback Michael Herrick and Shane Vereen on the other side.

Vereen hadn’t yet committed to Cal, but he was a rising star.

It wasn’t the hype or the great game I remember the most — a 35-28 Notre Dame win.

It’s Shane Vereen.

Vereen took this short pass from Herrick and took it down the left sideline, disappeared in a cluster of football players, then broke out of it, juked some defenders and scored.

I can still see the play.

Vereen was simply the most electrifying football player this decade.

He was quick and slippery and had the ability to break a big run on any play.

But on top of all that, Vereen was always humble.

He was a great track and field athlete, a role player on the basketball team and a great teammate.

Now he plays on a larger stage at Cal and is thriving.

The best is yet to come.
