SCV Senior Center offers free lectures, clinics in January

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, and glaucoma will be the subject of a talk by ophthalmologist Dr. Craig Helm from Valencia Opthalmology on Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Activity Rooms 1 & 2 of the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market St., Newhall 91321.

Other lectures slated for January at the SCV Senior Center are:
Wednesday, Jan. 13: County of Los Angeles Fifth District's Department of Consumer Affairs presents a "Smarter Seniors Forum" from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the dining room.

This special two-hour health and wellness event will empower seniors with information about protecting themselves and their assets.

Forum experts will be from a variety of backgrounds including the Department of Consumer Affairs, Adult Protective Services, Department of Mental Health and other areas.

Subjects will include common consumer scams; real estate fraud, foreclosures, reverse mortgage and landlord-tenant issues; abuse by conservators, relatives, caregivers; advanced health directives; identity theft and privacy crimes.

A question and answer period will follow each session, and there will be handouts listing valuable resources.

Wednesday, Jan. 20: Alan Benedict of the Neptune Society will present "Cremation: Seven Reasons Why People Choose Cremation in America." Talk will also include important information on veterans' benefits.

Wednesday, Jan. 27: Providence Health & Services presents Dr. Amy Goff who will provide a Doctor's Open Forum. Take medical questions and get answers from the doctor.

In addition, the following free health clinics will be offered:
Tuesday, Jan. 19: Blood sugar/diabetes clinic: Registered Dietitian Lori Robinson will provide free blood sugar testing from 11 a.m. to noon in the Day Care Office.

Wednesday, Jan. 20: Hearing clinic by Audiology Services of Newhall from 11 a.m. to noon in the Respite Office. These screenings are intended for people who do NOT wear hearing aids, although the audiologist welcomes questions from everyone.

Every Wednesday: Free blood pressure checks performed by registered nurses noon to 1 p.m. in Activity Room 3.

Note: There will be no foot screenings in January. However, Podiatrist Dr. Shane Rhodes will be at the Senior Center Thursday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Day Care Office for screenings.
