A Canyon Country man who died at a Newhall shooting range last week appeared to have used a rented handgun to shoot himself in the head, officials said.

Brian Dean, 35, checked out a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun and was shooting rounds at the Oak Tree Gun Club on Wednesday night just before other shooters noticed something was wrong, said Detective Frank Salerno, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau.

"They just noticed he was on the ground and had a gunshot wound to the head," said Salerno, who investigated the death before it was determined a suicide. "It seemed like it was his first time (shooting there). Nobody recognized him."

There were about 10 people near Dean in the shooting range's pistol section when the incident occurred just before 6 p.m., Salerno said.

Dean had been going through a custody battle for his children, Salerno said.

The detective did not know how many children Dean had or how old they are.

The owner of the Oak Tree Gun Club was not available for comment following the incident.
