In an effort to continue bringing high quality recreational facilities to our community, the city will be breaking ground this week on phase four of the Santa Clarita Sports Complex.

This new phase includes a new gymnasium, a multi-use playing field, more parking and landscaping, and a new and expanded skate park, investing $25 million in this popular city facility located in the center of Santa Clarita.

Currently, the city's Sports Complex is home to the Aquatic Center, with its three swimming pools - an Olympic sized pool, a 25-meter dive pool and a family recreation pool with a two-story high red slide. The Sports Complex also houses the Activities Center and a gymnasium, both popular community and recreation destinations.

Several years ago the city's leaders had the foresight to acquire 38 acres adjacent to the Sports Complex. We've worked closely with the public to create a master plan for the entire site which meets the needs of our residents.

The current 20-acre site, together with the adjoining 38 acres, are part of a multi-year, phased Sports Complex expansion plan including amenities such as a BMX track, a roller hockey rink and a dog park to name a few.

The city of Santa Clarita's Sports Complex will eventually house 60 acres of new facilities for our community.

The city's $25 million expansion of the Sports Complex begins with a grading project which will bring the Sports Complex area to 34 acres of high quality, recreational facilities. The new 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art skate park was designed in part with local skaters who worked hand-in-hand with the city to shape this new facility.

The new skate park design reflects local users' ideas and features bowls, a flow course and skate plaza elements, an adjacent restroom and concession building. The new skate park will replace the existing skate park and will be four times its size, making it a skating destination in our region. The skate park is expected to be completed and open to the public next spring.

Construction of the new gymnasium facility at the Sports Complex will be under way following the grading and is expected to open to the public in 2010. The new gym will add many amenities, including more indoor basketball and volleyball courts to accommodate the community's needs.

The phase four Sports Complex expansion project also includes a dog park, outdoor basketball courts with a roller hockey overlay, and the addition of much-needed playing fields that can be used for football, soccer, and free play.

The city works hard to develop and implement high-quality, value-based programs and facilities that encourage healthy lifestyles, as well as excellent recreation, social, and cultural activities for youth, adults, and families throughout the community.

We are very excited about the Sports Complex expansion project and the opportunity to provide for the recreational needs of our community for generations to come.

The city will host a groundbreaking event for the Sports Complex phase four project 10 a.m. Thursday at 20870 Centre Pointe Parkway. The event is free and open to the public.
