Robin Stevenson stepped past the Kohl's department store entrance with bags of shoes and jackets - all holiday gift exchanges for her family.

"Some were the wrong sizes and some they didn't like," said Stevenson, who asked her son to run ahead and secure a spot in the returns line.

Post-Christmas shoppers like Stevenson swarmed retail stores this weekend looking to redeem gift cards and to exchange or return holiday presents.

"It's typical," Stevenson, of Valencia, said referring to gift exchanges and adding that the day after Christmas is her husband's favorite time of year.

"It's the day he returns everything and gets the credit on the credit card," Stevenson said Saturday at the Valencia Kohl's store.
Others were not as tolerant of the additional effort required to stand in return lines.

"It's kind of frustrating," said Nancy Morales, of Valencia.

Morales ventured into Kohl's to exchange a black sweater for a more fitting size.

"Some people try to give you a smaller size to sound nice but they know it's not going to fit," she said.

Not all local stores experienced a surge of exchanges or returns.

Caston's TV and Appliance in Newhall saw small item returns, such as television parts, said owner Rick Caston.

"We're pretty good on our selling," Caston said. "We're more of a select purchase than a general purchase (shop)."
January is typically the shop's busiest month, Caston said.

"We're a ‘want store,'" he said. "So what people don't get for Christmas, they'll go back for themselves."
