The video program at West Ranch High School continued its award-winning work this spring, bringing home honors from state and national competitions.

At the 42nd annual California Media Festival, the WRTV daily broadcast was named the Best Student Produced Television Show in the state of California. "The Coffin," a short film by Tyler Sellars and Josh Chocooj, was named Most Creative Video and "Cruel Melody," a music video by Aaron LaRue and Jordan Paterson, won Best Cinematography at the festival.

"The Coffin" also took second place in the Short Film category at the Student Television Network Spring Nationals. There were more than 600 entries at the national competition in 23 categories.

"I was really surprised. I didn't expect any awards or anything like that," said Tyler.

Tyler and Josh both crafted "The Coffin" together, with Josh doing most of the acting and Tyler doing the directing, shooting and editing. What makes the film creative is the dark perspective and how it really hits you at the end, Tyler said.

"There's no dialog at all - just music and sound - so you really have to focus on the images and you take the story and you make it your own," Tyler said.

Aaron said that "Cruel Melody" probably took cinematography honors because of the special effects. Aaron was the director and Jordan was the producer of the video.

"In the video, we have people disappear and reappear and turn into dust," Aaron said. "It turned out really well."

Aaron said he was surprised to win at the California Media Festival, because the competition at the festival is pretty fierce.

"I was really excited, because that's a really competitive festival. California has a huge movie industry, so lots of high schools have really good video programs," Aaron said.

Aaron, Jordan, Tyler and Josh were all seniors when they entered the competitions and graduated May 30. The West Ranch video advisor is Jennifer Overdevest.
