Join the official Santa Clarita Polar Bear Club 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 1 and celebrate the New Year by taking a chilly plunge in the Aquatic Center's waterslide pool on New Year's Day. Rose care and pruning seminar
The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society is hosting a free rose care and pruning seminar 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market St., Newhall. The seminar will feature Rose Consultants Bob Belendez, Kitty Belendez, and Steve Jones who will demonstrate how to properly prune various types of roses. The Rose Consultants will also explain how to plant bareroot roses, how to rejuvenate roses grown in containers, and how to fertilize and mulch. Door prize, rose raffle, and refreshments. Docent classes for Placerita Center
Placerita Canyon Nature Center Volunteer-Naturalist Training Program Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Nature Center 19152 West Placerita Canyon Road, Newhall. Sessions run from 9 a.m. -noon Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 11 with a graduation dinner planned for March 27. Topics of the program include the study of native plants, ecology, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, geology, valley history and interpretive techniques. No special background is required. Other volunteer opportunities are available that do not require the nine-week training program. Early bird team registration due
