Los Angeles County Fire Chief Michael Freeman has delayed his retirement for one year to ease the search for his replacement.

Freeman's announcement comes four weeks after he told county officials he would retire effective March 2010. At least one county lawmaker welcomed the news that Freeman will remain with one of the nation's largest fire departments for one more year.

"This is an early Christmas gift to Los Angeles County," said Fifth District Supervisor Michael Antonovich. "I am pleased that Chief Freeman will continue to provide strong and effective leadership to our Fire Department for another year."

Antonovich represents the Santa Clarita Valley on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The board oversees county fire.
