Yes, I plagiarized

Let me begin by expressing my gratitude to The Signal for having allowed me to write as an unpaid columnist, and to all those who read my column - both those who agreed and disagreed with the points I made. I have enjoyed doing it and the exchange of ideas it promoted.

Regarding the recent controversy surrounding my column last Friday, let me admit my first response was one of being defensive. It was not my intent at any time to plagiarize anyone, especially a friend, mentor and professor.

My response to The Signal that day was to defend myself and object to the charge of plagiarism. (See original story.)

I have communicated and exchanged ideas with Professor Gary Wolfram for a number of years. I admire and respect his opinions.

My intent with my column was to elaborate on his premise regarding the health care debate.

Numerous times, my friend Wolfram had encouraged me to use his articles by copying his outlines and using his themes for the purpose of "getting the message out" - something I had never done until writing this last column.

In preparing my column, I did in fact use as an outline his article which ran on the Human Events blog. I did believe at the time I had sufficiently put into my own words the beliefs I held regarding the issue.

After thoughtful review and a time to reflect and after having read the side-by-side comparison, I must admit I in fact did not achieve what I had attempted.

To The Signal and its employees, including the publisher, the editors and editor of the opinion page, as well as those who read the column, I offer a sincere and heartfelt apology for what clearly, upon analysis and reflection, was plagiarism.

As to what I might have done differently, I believe I should have taken the time to allow someone else to review my column and allow them to read Wolfram's column and look at them for similarities. I wish I had done that.

There are no excuses and it is no one's responsibility but mine.

I accept that and again apologize.
