Sheriff's Department County of Los Angeles Detective Steve Lankford, Homicide Bureau, walks away from the scene of an apparent suicide in the Hart Park group campground area on Friday afternoon.

A man who apparently hanged himself from a tree at the William S. Hart Park campgrounds in Newhall on Friday afternoon has been identified, authorities said.

The body of 25-year-old Leopoldo Leon Jr. was discovered just before 1 p.m., said Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. David Smith.

Leon, who suffered from mental illness, left his home in Newhall on Tuesday and never returned, a family member said.

Foul play is not suspected, said Detective Steve Lankford of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau.

Detectives learned of the hanging just after a woman walking through the secluded area spotted the body about 100 feet up a hillside and contacted park officials, Lankford said.

Coroner's officials have not yet determined the official cause of death, Smith said.
