A local California Highway Patrol officer arrested a suspected car thief Thursday during what he had thought was a routine traffic stop, authorities said.

CHP Officer Gordon Verrone said he pulled over Waymon Moore, 24, after the driver allegedly ran a red light on Soledad Canyon Road at Shangri-La Drive.

But when Verrone scanned the license plates, he discovered the 2005 Toyota Tacoma had been stolen last week in the San Fernando Valley, he said.

Verrone arrested Moore, who was on parole, on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, he said. He also questioned and released two other men in the vehicle.

“The car was impounded,” Verrone said. “The owner will be contacted today and he’ll pick it up.”

Moore is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court in Santa Clarita today, Verrone said.
