Sand Canyon resident Bonnie Gunnison is spreading the word to her neighbors — a dangerous cougar killed her family’s dog and may still be roaming the area.

Department of Fish and Game officials were not available to confirm the report Thursday afternoon, and sheriff’s deputies said they did not have any reports about the sighting.

Last week, the 81-year-old woman was walking to her barn with her pug when the dog started barking uncontrollably.

About 15 minutes later, her 7-year-old granddaughter discovered another family dog, a yellow Labrador retriever, dead in a pool of blood just off the driveway, Gunnison said.

During the two nights that followed, other family members spotted the cougar lurking near her home in the rural 16000 block of Pineview Road, she added.

“I suppose it’s still checking us out,” said Gunnison. “We’re afraid to go out at night — down to our barn or anything.”

Gunnison made about a dozen warning flyers with the number to the Department of Fish and Game in case the cougar is sighted again.

Gunnison said her relatives have contacted the department, and said she hopes officials will track down the cougar.

“It’s just a very dangerous situation,” she said, adding that those in her neighborhood have children and pets to worry about. “I don’t want anybody or anything to get hurt. This thing has to be stopped somehow.”
