The 121st Rose Parade will begin at 8 a.m. on Jan. 1 and will continue all the pageantry and spirit of past years. You can purchase tickets for grandstand seating or grab yourself a spot on the curb. Of course, if you can't get up that early, you can certainly watch the show on television.

If you're going to watch Ohio State play Oregon in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, you probably already have tickets - but if you want to watch the Rose Parade, take an icy plunge on the day or party the old year away the evening before, here are the happenings in the Santa Clarita Valley and nearby.

For the second year in a row, Six Flags Magic Mountain will host the Six Flags Rock N' Ride New Year's Eve Party, a "safe and sober" New Year's Eve alternative for local youths and families. Guests can visit for the entire day and stay for the evening activities, or come just for the party.

Highlighting the evening festivities are a deejay and dancing, Guitar Hero and DanceDanceRevolution competitions, karaoke and a special countdown fireworks display on the Sky Tower with a Coca-Cola toast to ring in the New Year. During the day, treat your family to the thrill park's world-class roller coasters such as Terminator Salvation: The Ride, X2, Tatsu, Scream, Goliath, Colossus, Viper and many more. New Year's Eve Train

What better way to bring in the New Year than a magical evening journey on the Fillmore & Western Railway Co. vintage passenger train? During the trip, enjoy an elegant dinner prepared and served onboard while members of P. Maxwell Productions acting troupe entertain you as famous "Hollywood personalities." LETMESAIL's annual New Year's Eve Ball, "New York" will be held at the Hyatt Valencia on Thursday, Dec. 31. This year the ball has an exciting new twist; an homage to New York City, right here in Santa Clarita.

"Every year we will pay tribute to another exciting destination with a themed celebration. This year's New Year's Eve Ball, New York, will be the best party in Santa Clarita," said Pam Sorlagas, executive director of LETMESAIL. "We are thrilled to expand on this already successful event. Guests at this year's ball will be dazzled by the big city lights, smell the street vendor's goods and listen to the beat of New York. Live entertainment, dancing, "Atlantic City" casino games and a ball drop at midnight will finish things off.

The third annual New Year's Eve Ball will benefit LETMESAIL, a Santa Clarita-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which offers social, recreational, and educational programs for teens and adults with disabilities, enabling them to lead healthier, happier, more productive, and fulfilling lives. Celebrate New Year's Eve with the Repertory East Playhouse on Dec. 31 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. For one night the prince and the pauper can mingle and dance with one another without being known.

The Roast House will open for early dinner with the full menu at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, and the late night celebration begins at 9 p.m.

For a modest $50 per person you can dance to the sounds of the band Guess What until midnight, when DJ Max (known from KROQ and KISS FM) takes over. The full buffet will include tri-tip, chicken, fish, veggies and dessert.

The dinner includes five courses of the restaurant's best entrees, a bottle of champagne and an appetizer bar. Late entry gets you two free drinks and access to the appetizer bar. There will be three dinner shows on New Year's Eve featuring comedians Mark Eddie and Paul Ogata. At Marie Callender's the two $64-per-person shows include dinner, champagne toast, party favors, hats and performances by both headliners.

On Thursday, Dec. 31, from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Universal City Walk will rock you into the new year at L.A.'s largest free New Year's Eve Party. City Walk brings double the excitement with two stages with live bands, two giant video screens and fireworks from each end of the street.

Celebrate New Year's Eve aboard the Queen Mary with five fantastic shows. The entertainment includes retro-jazz, hits from the '70's, '80s and '90s, Latin and contemporary pop and much more. Ring in the New Year with a gigantic fireworks display from the stern of the ship, so you will have the best view in the city.

The 4th annual Glacier Slide Polar Bear Swim will splash at 9 a.m. on Jan. 1. The Aquatic Center doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the cost is $3.

The event is a chilly plunge in the waterslide pool and spectators are welcome to come and cheer on their "bears." Warm up by the heaters and enjoy coffee and doughnuts. More info: santa-clarita.com.

Rose Parade
The 121st Rose Parade will take place on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010 at 8 a.m. (PST), featuring spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats and high-stepping equestrian units.

The parade will be broadcast on ABC, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, KTLA (Tribune), NBC, RFD-TV, the Travel Channel and Univision.

Grandstand seating for the Rose Parade is available by calling the Sharp Seating Company at (626) 795-4171 through Dec. 31.

Every person, regardless of age, must have a ticket to sit in the grandstands. However, if a child is two years of age or younger he/she may sit on an adult's lap. If not seated on an adult's lap, each child must have a ticket.

Curbside viewing is also welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Pasadena city ordinance allows the occupancy of curbside space along the parade route beginning at noon on the day before the parade.
