The city of Victorville passed a resolution this week confirming its support of federal legislation that would provide Cemex, Inc. with land in Victorville to prevent the company from mining in Soledad Canyon.

U.S. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon's H.R. 5887 would swap the Soledad Canyon mining rights for property in Victorville. Cemex would sell the Victorville property for purposes other than mining.

Victorville officials have expressed support for the bill since building on the property would help with the city's economic development plan.

"The solution created with H.R. 5887 is even better than a win-win because this solution also helps the city of Victorville's master planning efforts, while simultaneously solving Santa Clarita's issue," Santa Clarita Councilwoman Laurene Weste told the Victorville council. "We deeply appreciate the partnership opportunity that H.R. 5887 brings to the cities of Victorville and Santa Clarita in helping each community advance its goals."

The city is asking residents to send letters of support to McKeon's office. Sample letters are available at www.santa-clarita.com.
