The answer is in the numbers when it comes to Whitman

In a letter to the editor ("Republican candidate already lying, Dec. 7"), Paul Sibek accuses Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman of "peddling falsehoods" with her statements of California's (addictive) overspending while The Signal's editorial staff compounds the assertion entitling it as "Republican candidate already lying."

It's nice to see The Signal has maintained its promise of "civility."

At this moment we don't know if Whitman specified that California's "general fund" spending increased 80 percent over 10 years, or if she said spending in general had risen that much.

However, a simple fact-check with, exploring a site of U.S. government spending, specifically California, provides the following numbers:

In 1999, total spending was $75.3 billion, and in 2008 it was $139.9 billion - an increase of more than 85 percent in spending with guesstimates for even more in 2009 and 2010.

Bashing letter writers and the print media can and will do all of their parsing and name-calling without limits, but the hard numbers are there for the honest people to read.

California: just another stellar example of a state that has been run into the deep mud by a legislature of liberal enslaving spenders
