From left, National Honor Society and Academy of the Canyons students Brandon Williams, Madeline Tan and Ana Knauf sort through some of the 1,500 pounds of clothing donated by AOC students for local families in need.

In a matter of eight hours, a local high school of 374 students collected 1,500 pounds of clothing for the Santa Clarita Valley’s needy.

Academy of the Canyons’ National Honor Society, in conjunction with Wayman Cleaners, Inc., a local dry cleaner located in Newhall, hosted a school-wide clothing drive to benefit the needy of Santa Clarita.

Advisement classes of all grade levels competed against each other for the honor of being Academy of the Canyons’ Most Charitable Class for 2009; and by day’s end the collection room was overflowing with bags of gently-worn clothes.

After growing up in an impoverished region of South Korea, Wayman Cleaners owner, “Mike” Chang, immigrated to the United States.

He remembers receiving food from the United States when he was a child.

In an effort to give back to the country that graciously gave to him, Mike began his “God’s Hand Movement” at his dry cleaning store.

He collects, cleans and distributes free clothing to needy citizens of Santa Clarita.

Academy of the Canyons Principal Jill Shenberger noticed his efforts and offered the assistance of her school.

With the help of the school’s National Honor Society Advisor Robert Walker, and President Madeline Tan, a blitz clothing drive was arranged to take place on the school’s campus.

With one day to prepare and advertise, the National Honor Society’s executive officers fervently visited every classroom to announce the news in the hopes of a successful drive.

The final total of 1,500 pounds was a rousing success.

Wayman Cleaners will be hosting a free clothing distribution on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wayman Cleaners is located at 23120 Lyons Avenue in Newhall and can be contacted at (661) 259-5857.

Madeline Tan is a senior at Academy of the Canyons.
