Two men accused of being involved in an auto-theft ring in Canyon Country earlier were sentenced today after they accepted plea deals from prosecutors in October, officials said.

A third defendant is scheduled to face trial, officials added.

A San Fernando court judge sentenced Nellson Vels, 51, and John Landon, 36, to three years of formal probation and time already served in county jail, said deputy district attorney Alex Karkanen.

The judge also sentenced Vels to 30 days of community service, Karkanen said.

In October, Vels and Landon each pleaded no contest to one felony count of unlawfully driving or taking a vehicle, officials said.

Vels' and Landon's attorneys said the defendants' sentences could be reduced to misdemeanors and expunged, or deleted, in about 18 months if the men do not violate their probation terms.

A third defendant related to the case, Daryl Perkins, 50, also appeared in San Fernando court today.

He is scheduled to return on Dec. 8, 2010, for a pre-trial conference, Karkanen said.

Perkins pleaded not guilty in October to felony counts of unlawfully taking a vehicle, receiving stolen property and operating a chop shop -- an illegal operation that disassembles stolen vehicles in order to resell the parts.
