Reason for the season

Regarding the essays written by 5th graders in the "Zone for Kids" section of the Dec. 1 edition, the subject of which was: "What holiday tradition do you celebrate?"

One child mentioned Hanukkah as part of their celebration, a credit to their upbringing and to their parents who have made them aware of why they celebrate their holiday tradition. Not one of the other children mentioned celebrating Christmas as the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Have we forgotten to instill the reason why we even have Christmas? We have become such a materialistic nation.

People spend money they do not have, run up their credit cards to be indebted for the next six months or longer to get them paid off and indulge their children with every latest thing that will be outdated next year.

The sadder part is they expect so much. We are spoiling them for the real world when they graduate from school and get out on their own. (If they ever move out.)

We must remember "the reason for the season" and read the Christmas story as found in Luke 2:1-20 every Christmas Eve or Christmas morning so it is rooted firmly in the hearts and minds of our children.

Receiving and giving presents and having all the great food we are so blessed with is the result of this wonderful time of the year.

Let us rejoice, be happy and thank God for his unspeakable gift.
