Valencia graduate Michael Herrick’s junior season with Northern Arizona University football garnered him plenty of recognition.

That attention materialized in the form of a ninth-place finish for the Walter Payton Award as voted on by sports information directors, writers and broadcasters, The Sports Network announced Monday.

The Walter Payton Award goes to the top player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Herrick received 31 points, including one first-place vote after finishing 270-of-407 for 3,356 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Northern Arizona finished fifth in the Big Sky Conference this season with a 5-6 overall record.

Past winners of the award since 2000 include Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook.

The three finalists are Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards, who won the award last year, Elon wide receiver Terrell Hudgins and Southern Illinois running back Deji Karim.

The winner will be announced on Dec. 17.

Elite company
What do Hart High graduate Ryan Wolfe and former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham have in common?

Wolfe was named to the All-Mountain West Conference first team for the third year on Tuesday, and with the announcement, became one of three players in University of Nevada, Las Vegas history to do so.

Cunningham was named to the first team from 1982-84 when the school belonged to the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Safety Jamaal Brimmer did it from 2002-04.

The senior received first-team honors in 2006 and 2008 and was an honorable mention in 2007.

Only six players have achieved the feat in Mountain West Conference history.

On the season, Wolfe had 74 catches for 760 yards and two touchdowns.

The All-American candidate also took home five team awards at Sunday’s UNLV banquet, including Offensive Most Valuable Player, Most Inspirational Award and Offensive Captain Award.

Team AMSOIL finishes strong again
Valencia-based Team AMSOIL Offshore and owner Bob Teague finished up yet another elite-level powerboat racing season last month, winning its second straight UIM/SBI Offshore World Championship in Key West, Fl.

The champion was determined by the collective finish over three races, of which Team AMSOIL won all three.

The races were held Nov. 5, 7 and 9.

In fact, Team AMSOIL won all but one event it entered in 2009, also taking Cat Lite High Points Title in the OPA Racing Circuit, The Geico Triple Crown and the Offshore Super Series National Championship.
