A suspected gang member could be sent back to Mexico for carrying a loaded gun in public, authorities said.

Deputies arrested Jorge Cervantes, 19, of Castaic, on Tuesday afternoon after they stopped him walking eastbound on Soledad Canyon Road near Whites Canyon Road and allegedly found a .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in his waistband, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Hershey.

They also found extra ammunition in the suspect's pocket, Hershey said.

Cervantes allegedly told the deputies he was a member of a Canyon Country gang, and that he was carrying the weapon for protection against rival gang members, Hershey said. The suspected gang member was recently deported to Mexico but had returned, Hershey said.

Cervantes faces possible deportation and felony charges for possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm registered to another owner and participation in a criminal gang, Hershey said.

Cervantes is being held without bail on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold pending immigration proceedings and potential federal charges, according to a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station report.
