Attorney appointed to Newhall board

Newhall School District board members Tuesday picked attorney Brian Walters to join the board for a two-year term following Michael McGrath’s resignation.

The decision came after about six hours of interviews and discussion with nine candidates who applied for the open spot on the board.

Walters, a Stevenson Ranch resident and parent of three Newhall district children, is a first-time board member.

He said he wanted to serve on the board to make a difference in the community and give parents a voice as deep budget cuts face the elementary school district.

“That means the world to me,” he said.

The appointment process comes after local voters elected McGrath on Nov. 3 to a second term on the Newhall board, despite the fact McGrath had pulled out of the race in September, citing family circumstances.

His name still appeared on the ballot, and he received more votes than any other candidates.

Walters did not run in the November election.

He will be sworn in next Tuesday with Phil Ellis and Christy Smith, who were elected by voters.
