Fruit spill backs up I-5

Fruit spilled on southbound Interstate 5 near Highway 14 this morning, backing up traffic as far north as Parker Road, officials said.

"There were pomegranates everywhere," said California Highway Patrol Officer John Lutz.

About 3:35 a.m., a big-rig truck crashed into a 1995 GMC pickup truck that was carrying the load on the southbound I-5 just north of Highway 14, according to a CHP report.

The pickup truck skidded from the impact and spilled the red, globular fruit across the freeway's third and fourth lanes, the report.

Caltrans workers were handling the cleanup, and lanes were re-opened at about 9:15 a.m., CHP officials said.

The driver and a passenger of the pickup truck received moderate injuries, the report said.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash.
