Santa Clarita dog owners are getting a new park to share with their slobbering friends.

The city is opening Canine Country, a half-acre dog park, Wednesday at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex on Centre Pointe Parkway. The dog park is one of several new additions to the complex at the grand opening celebration.

Canine Country is the first dog park to open in Canyon Country, said city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz. The park will provide plastic bags so owners can clean up after their pet, she said.

City staff is also opening two full-sized basketball courts, covered picnic areas, more seating at the Aquatic Center, a mile of lighted walkways and 200 parking spaces, Ortiz said.

The Aquatic Center will now be able to seat 635 people near the 50-meter lap pool for competitions, classes and other events.
A sand volleyball court will also open in the next several weeks, Ortiz said.

The latest expansion will enlarge the sports complex to about 60 acres. The city also opened a 40,000 square foot skate park earlier this year, Ortiz said.

The city plans to expand the dog park and open a BMX bike park and gymnasium in the future, Ortiz said.
