I am a junior honors student at Valencia High School. While I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with my summer, I came across an exciting opportunity for an overseas experience that is likely to change my life.

While most teens are going to be spending their summers getting a tan or working a part-time job, I have decided to devote my summer hours to doing a volunteer project in Costa Rica.

On July 5 I hope to depart for a one-week trip to El Sur, Costa Rica, where I will be helping to build a recycling center for a small impoverished village. I can't think of a more fulfilling, enriching life experience. Not only do I get to go to one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but I get to immerse myself in a foreign culture that could not be more different than my home in Valencia.

Globe Aware, the organization that will be conducting the trip, is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization that was founded in 1993. They have been operating international volunteer programs for over 10 years, in
14 different countries working on projects like painting schools, planting trees and setting up first aid centers.

While Globe Aware focuses on "promoting cultural awareness and environmental sustainability," my goal is also to get the chance to touch the lives of people less fortunate than I am, and hopefully educate those here at home about the impoverished people around the world that need our help.

But in order for me to be able to go on my trip, I must raise $2,100 to pay for the program fee and international transportation, which I must turn in by June 15!

My main goal is not only to go on this trip, but to also raise awareness about this cause and, hopefully, make a difference in both Costa Rica and Santa Clarita. I just want to make a difference in the world and I know if we all do a little, we can accomplish a lot!
