The William S. Hart Union High School District is known for the quality of its music programs, and this year is no exception. All six district high schools have qualified for the Marching Band Championships hosted by the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, the first time all six schools have made it through the rigorous qualification process.

The championships will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, in three different venues depending on the size of the band.

Canyon and Saugus high schools compete in Division 2A, with performances running from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Mira Mesa High School in San Diego. West Ranch High School, newly elevated to Division 5A, will also compete at Mira Mesa, with a performance scheduled at 8:56 p.m.

Valencia and Golden Valley high schools compete in Division 3A, which will be held at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Corona from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Golden Valley performs at 4:36 p.m. and Valencia at 6:12 p.m.

Hart High School will be going for its eighth straight championship in Division 4A at Warren High School in Downey. The competition starts at 5:45 p.m., and Hart is scheduled to perform at 8:40 p.m.

Only the top six bands in each division are invited to compete in the championship tournament, and Hart district high schools will have six of the final 24 bands which qualified for the championship competition.

In their own divisions, Saugus is ranked third and Canyon fifth; Valencia fourth and Golden Valley sixth; Hart first; and West Ranch second, including the single highest score received by any Division 5A band this season. Each individual competition win accumulated points toward the championships.

Hart and Saugus high schools have made the finals all eight years since the championships' inception. Hart, Saugus and West Ranch high schools have medaled in the past years, and Hart and West Ranch have won first place in their respective divisions.
