Always a reason to give thanks

"In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich."
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

What are we to say about Thanksgiving that hasn't been said before in countless cliche-ridden newspaper editorials down through the annals of journalism history?

Perhaps, if there's nothing new to say, it's because good advice never changes.

So we'll stick with some reminders.

A look back at the past year reveals so many things not to be thankful for. But often, you make the most of the good by taking stock of the bad.

Who could be thankful for a Dow that continued to plummet almost every day?

What was so good about the failures of financial institutions and auto makers?

Is there a silver lining to total national unemployment - factoring in those who are underemployed or who've given up searching for work - teetering near 18 percent?

Within our own walls, it was difficult to bear the burden of laying off employees and making widespread cuts in early 2009.

The list goes on: America's involvement in two bloody military conflicts continues; that trillions-big stimulus act hasn't created all the jobs that were promised.

And in case you missed it, Oprah's going off the air in 2011.

Tales of woe in the wake of the recession could fill countless books. It is almost certain several examples have likely come to mind as you've been reading this.

We won't go on, because in the midst of all these trials there have been bright spots.

The stock market has started to rebound, as it has in the past.

Unemployment has fueled the fires of creativity, propelling some among the jobless into different careers or compelling them to create new ones.

We're not out of the woods yet, but The Signal has seen a turnaround in recent months, in the form of increased revenue and added employees. We've been around almost 91 years and have no plans to quit anytime soon.

But there are more reasons than those to be thankful.

If you still have a roof over your head after a year of real estate madness, be thankful.

If you're still cashing a paycheck regularly, be glad.

And if you still have your loved ones around you, still have friends to lean on when times are trying, give thanks.

We're thankful because, in large part, we're hopeful for the future promised with every new sunrise.

So today, take a deep breath, appreciate even the smallest bright spots in the day and be thankful.

Whether you carve up a golden roasted turkey, dig into a hot vegetarian lasagna or enjoy a smoky, salty ham, we at The Signal wish you a happy Thanksgiving.
