Multiple-Grammy winner Gordon Goodwin visited West Ranch High School Nov. 5 to work with the Studio A Jazz Band.

Although Goodwin has played in a big band setting with some of the best artists in jazz history, and written music for numerous films, he is probably best known for writing music for and directing his own “Big Phat Band.”

Goodwin wrote a specific piece, “The Principal of the Thing,” for the West Ranch musicians and Robert Babko, West Ranch jazz band director, who called the performance a truly amazing piece of music.

“It is really a unique combination of whimsical figures and hard driving jazz, that probably only Gordon could have written,” Babko said.

“We are honored to have had him write for us and very appreciative of his visit.”
