Our prayers to the Kennemore family

Santa Clarita Valley lost another life to suicide - the young life of Brigett Kennemore.

In my 25 years in law enforcement, teens who attempt suicide have said they were trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible. It is a way to escape feelings of rejection, hurt or loss, or they feel unwanted, unloved or victimized. Teen suicide is the third leading cause of death for teenagers.

Her death might have been avoided. Please let her death not go in vain. This is a reminder to all of us to be aware of the signs of a person who is depressed and is showing signs of despair and possible suicide.

We have a responsibility as parents, relatives, teachers, counselors and especially peers and friends, to know the signs of depression. Too many times, we get caught up in our daily activities and we miss the "message" the suicide victim is sending out or we feel we are intruding or embarrassed to approach the person.

Don't be afraid to reach out to someone who shows these signs. You just might save a life.

Our prayers to Brigett's family.
