Neglecting real football news in the SCV

I opened The Signal this morning to see a front-page, full-length article ("Sporting teamwork on Super Bowl Saturday," Nov. 16) on a flag football championship game played this past weekend. The game was attended by a Signal staff writer as well as a photographer who had three photos adorning the article, including a full-color photo on the front page.

Contrast that coverage to the coverage of the Freshman Foothill League Football Championship game between West Ranch and Valencia that took place last Thursday. It was an epic, heavyweight slugfest between an 8-1 West Ranch squad and a 9-0 Valencia squad, both undefeated at 4-0 in league play.

The West Ranch field was overflowing with fans who were treated to one of the best football games I've ever watched at any level. No one seemed to give the West Ranch team much of a chance against a powerful Valencia team that was steamrolling opponents all season.

In classic David and Goliath fashion, West Ranch prevailed 48-34 to win its first-ever football league championship at any level.

This in itself is big news. Doing it against the valley's preeminent football power is even more noteworthy.

Games like this one provide a peek into the future of football in the Santa Clarita Valley, something which a great many of your readers care about.

Unfortunately, The Signal didn't deem it newsworthy enough to cover it in the same fashion as elementary school kids playing flag football. The freshman game was allotted a single paragraph and buried on page four of Friday's sports section.

Ironically, the JV game between the same two schools was given the same small amount of space on the same page four of Sunday's edition. Was that game significant? How about a West Ranch win with 0.8 seconds in the game to give them a JV Foothill League co-championship?

Two lower-division football championships for West Ranch earned via wins over Valencia - not interested. Just keep the great flag football coverage coming.

Editor's note: The flag football game was covered by The Signal's news staff as a profile of the city's flag-football program. The freshman game between West Ranch and Valencia received coverage by way of The Signal's "Local Roundup" in the sports section.
