Unresponsive local school officials

Last month I had a policy/procedurial question for all the school districts in Santa Clarita. I e-mailed all the elected school board members in Newhall, Saugus, Hart and Sulphur Springs, the superintendents in Newhall and Saugus and called the superintendent in Hart. (I forgot to contact the superintendent of Sulphur Springs).

I received no replies — I repeat, no replies — from anybody in Newhall or Sulphur Springs districts, and only one board member, Gloria Mercado-Fortine, replied from Hart, along with a prompt return call from Mrs. Engelbrecht, assistant superintendant.

The response from the Saugus district was outstanding, with three of the board members replying (Judy Egan Umeck, Rose Diaz and Rose Koscielny), and Superintendant Judith Fish giving an initial reply as well as a comprehensive follow-up reply.

My thanks to all who took the time to respond.

As for the many, especially all from Newhall and Sulphur Springs, who chose not to reply, the readers can decide if a “no response” from an elected official is acceptable.

As a parent, grandparent and retired teacher, I believe a “no response” is dismissive and completely unacceptable.
