Regarding Lutness’s column in The Signal (“Majority rules in a democracy,” Oct. 13):

First, on issues of taxation, the state constitution has been amended to provide a two-thirds requirement for tax increases, so a simple majority does not rule, contrary to her assertion.

More importantly, this state is bankrupt — as anyone can plainly see — and here we have Lutness calling for even more expenditures of non-existent funds and decrying cuts to some of the very social programs that have bankrupted us in the first place.

Lastly, she bases her argument on a Democrat majority in Sacramento that’s been guaranteed and solidified by a redistricting process designed to safeguard that very majority.

No sale. Let’s have a complete redistricting designed by an independent commission with the goal in mind of achieving truly representative districts as a first step.

After that we can examine all the other issues.

The two-thirds requirement for taxation is just about the only thing that keeps the political hacks in Sacramento from financially raping us all.
