The West Ranch girls tennis team took a big step forward this season by winning a share of the Foothill League title.

Then, the Wildcats advanced past the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs on Thursday for the first time ever.

The ride came to an end Saturday at Lakewood — but West Ranch wasn’t leaving without a fight.

The Wildcats fell 10-8 at Lakewood despite good outings by No. 1 doubles team True O’Neill and Mallory Martin and No. 1 singles player Ana Lucia Fuentes.

“It’s a great barometer as to how good we are for Lakewood to have to fight that hard to beat us,” said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker.

“The girls did great.”

O’Neill and Martin won two out of three matches 6-2, 6-0, and Fuentes won two sets 6-0, 6-0.

The No. 2 doubles team of Salene Scamardo and Lena Poonnopatam won two sets 6-3, 6-3, and the No. 3 doubles team of Jordyn Jaffe and Gabby Morici battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the last set to win on a tiebreak 7-6 (7-4).

West Ranch’s other win came from Angela Park, who beat Lakewood’s No. 3 singles player 6-3.

The Wildcats were without No. 2 singles player Ana Cecilia Fuentes due to illness.

“They’ve got a great 1-2 punch,” Spiecker said of Lakewood. “We have them in depth, but we didn’t have our depth. We are top-heavy. We’ve got two good singles teams and two good doubles teams.”

West Ranch finished its season at 11-5.
