Canyon flips into the playoffs

After possibly the roughest season in Canyon football history, the Cowboys finally have something to celebrate.

They’re going to the playoffs.

“For the kids, I’m so proud of them,” said Canyon head coach Chris Varner. “So many injuries, so many thing go wrong, six inches short (in a loss) against West Ranch.  ...”

Because Canyon, Saugus and West Ranch all finished 2-3 in the Foothill League, a coin toss decided which team would be the third and final representative from the Foothill League for the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

Varner, West Ranch head coach Sean O’Brien and Saugus head coach Jason Bornn flipped quarters as 16 others watched, including all three schools’ principals and athletic directors.

The group gathered in the administration office at Valencia High, where the flip was done at 10:20 p.m.

The odd coin from the flip determined who the playoff team would be.

Another option was the odd coin would be out, then the playoff team would be determined by who of the remaining two won the season’s matchup.

If that were the case, Saugus would be going to the playoffs based off its 26-22 win over West Ranch on Oct. 23.

Instead, Canyon, which began the season 0-8 — the worst start in school history — is in.

The Cowboys won their final two games of the season, including Friday’s 17-10 victory over Saugus at Canyon High.

Varner’s winning flip was tails.

Canyon finds out who its first-round opponent will be when the playoff brackets are released on Sunday.
