Aiming to combat typically low donation amounts in the summer, the Hunger Defense Fund is hosting a community food drive this weekend.

A number of local grocery stores are partnering in the drive, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday.

Non-perishable food items can be dropped off, or extra items can be purchased at the store an donated on the spot.

Since opening in 2002, the nonprofit Hunger Defense Fund has provided more that 8,400 Santa Clarita Valley residents with food.

The fund is dedicated to operating on a "1 percent budget," spending 99 cents of every dollar received directly on food and programs for the needy.

Volunteers are still needed for the food drive. To help out, call (661) 299-9273.

The following grocery stores are participating in the food drive: the Albertson's stores at Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway, Bouquet and Haskell canyon roads, Copperhill Road, and Valencia Boulevard and The Old Road; the Pavillions at McBean and Magic Mountain parkways; the Ralph's stores at Castaic Road, Granary Square on McBean Parkway, Soledad and Whites canyon roads, McBean Parkway and Decoro Drive, Orchard Village Road and Lyons Avenue, and Pico Canyon Road and The Old Road; the Smart and Final at Newhall Ranch Road and Rye Canyon Road; the Stater Brothers at Sierra Highway and Via Princessa; and the Vons stores at Soledad and Sand Canyon roads, Lyons Avenue and Wiley Canyon Road, Bouquet Canyon Road and Newhall Ranch Road, The Old Road and Pico Canyon Road; and Whole Foods Market at Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway.
