Hart’s singles not enough

The strength of the Hart High girls tennis team in 2009 was its singles players.

Point proven Thursday when the Indians’ singles players took six sets from Long Beach Wilson in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs in Long Beach.

But that’s all Hart could get on the Moore League champions in a 12-6 loss.

“It was,” said Hart head coach Patty Labat on if the result was indicative of the season. “And we were struggling in doubles. They were improving, but today (Long Beach Wilson’s doubles) were just better players.”

Hart’s Anne Susdorf swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Susdorf lost only one game in six playoff sets.

Victoria Lionetti won two sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Shelly Sachdeva won a set 6-1.

Hart won five games in doubles.

Yet there is a lot of hope for the Indians.

After a third-place finish in the Foothill League and a playoff victory Tuesday in the wild-card round against Righetti, the Indians finished 10-9 overall.

The Indians expect to have all nine starters return next season.

“I’m very excited. It’s only going to get better,” Labat said.

The season isn’t over for Foothill League champion Susdorf.

She will compete in the CIF-SS Individual Prelim on Nov. 20.
