Early this morning I went into my garden and picked up the Sunday morning paper, and was greeted with the headline that the House passed the most sweeping health-care plan since the creation of Medicare 44 years ago. This is the first time in more than a hundred years that Congress has had the moral fortitude to pass a comprehensive health insurance reform.

The 220 House of Representative leaders who voted “yes” for this bill deserve our congratulations and thanks, especially in the way they resisted tremendous pressures from insurance lobbyists. But the job is not done.

As the bill wends its way toward a final House vote, the majority of Americans support complete health care reform and encourage all representatives to pass a version that will truly provide secure and stable insurance coverage, expand coverage for anyone who lacks insurance, lower costs for families and business owners and reduce the deficit.

Let’s send a message to the insurance companies that Americans will no longer be victimized by their corporate greed.
