No excuse for Ft. Hood shooting

To purposely harm those who volunteer to serve in uniform to protect our nation is inconceivable and irreconcilable.

As the truth comes forward and this very sick individual’s whole story is understood, I am sure Major Nidal Malik Hasan’s reactions to bias and bigotry he experienced or perceived to have experienced in the Army will come under scrutiny.

America is not, and has not ever been, totally free from discrimination against minorities; nonetheless, that is in no way an excuse for murdering soldiers. Make no mistake about it, murder is exactly what happened to our soldiers at Fort Hood.

As a Muslim American of African heritage, I feel the sting of these vicious crimes acutely. Every day, Muslim American servicemen and women strive to demonstrate their love of this country and their commitment to defending America by their voluntary service in our
Armed Services, many of them with ranks far below that of what Major Hasan had achieved.

They, by and large, serve as many minorities before them have served — to demonstrate by example that America is for all of her diverse components, and all of her diverse components are for America.

The horror of mental illness respects no religious boundaries, and the actions of this major can certainly be described as absolutely crazy, and his insane actions in no way can be ascribed to Islam.

I feel the loss of those soldiers and imagine the pain their families have needlessly been subjected to as I think all Americans do.

As a Muslim American of African heritage, I feel especially sensitive to the fact that military service has been the way up into the mainstream of American life for numerous minorities in our history.

I condemn the actions of Major Hasan, a murderously insane coward, who has tarnished the honor of all the other soldiers including the Muslims who are serving our great nation in uniform with valor and integrity.
