With a three-hour bus ride before its postseason opener, the Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team could have come out flat.

As it turns out, the Cardinals were anything but sluggish.

Santa Clarita Christian swept Coast Valley League champion Shandon 3-0 Tuesday in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA playoffs behind eight kills and two blocks by middle Shannon Houchin.

Outside Natalie Keoshian had seven kills, five digs and four aces for the Cardinals, who won by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.

“I’m ecstatic, especially after traveling,” said SCCS head coach Darcy Brown. “You never know how good they’re going to be after three hours on the road, but we came out and won.”

Santa Clarita Christian (10-7) fell behind 8-0 to start the third game, and trailed by the same margin midway through the game before rallying for several straight points on Olivia Gwinn’s serve.

The Cardinals later closed the game out on the serve of Joanna Masopust.

“We weren’t playing to our potential,” Brown said. “I think we relaxed. There was a little bit of confusion on the court. We just got back in it and finished.”

Gwinn finished with four aces and six digs, while Masopust added 22 assists and an ace.

Santa Clarita Christian’s Amanda Mothershead had four kills and two aces, while Julia Henning had three kills and three blocks. Carli
Broadbent had four aces and Logan Hermanson had two kills.

The Cardinals will now face either Hesperia Christian or AGBU of Canoga Park at 7 p.m. Thursday. If SCCS ends up playing Hesperia Christian, it will host the second-round matchup.
